In a World Cup already besieged by injuries, two more players will be held out of action today as Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon and standout Uruguay striker Luis Suarez are both out.

Buffon had hurt his ankle in training yesterday, leaving his availability in doubt. Manager Cesare Prandelli described the injury as a “very, very light ankle twist” and “nothing serious,” but it was enough to keep the veteran out of action in what will be his fifth World Cup.

Italy meet England tonight in one of the most anticipated games of the Group Stage, and missing their captain and goalkeeper is a tough blow in what should be a very competitive battle.

In the other Group D match, Uruguay were forced to kick off their opening game without Suarez, who led the Barclay’s Premier League in scoring but who also underwent knee surgery just three weeks ago.

Suarez is, however, in uniform and is on the bench, so there is still a chance he may see action in the second half.
