Were you one of the many people who were outraged that the United States was not awarded the 2022 World Cup, both shocked and appalled to learn it would instead be held in Qatar? You likely assumed there must have been some foul play at work.

Well, you were right.

A report in today’s Sunday Times says that they have “millions” of documents to support their claim that FIFA officials were bribed with over £3 million in order to award the tournament to Qatar. The report says that it was all part of “a covert campaign by Mohamed bin Hammam,” who was already banned for life once by the FIFA Ethics Committee for shady practices during the 2011 FIFA Presidential election.

FIFA’s Vice President Jim Boyce has already said he would support a re-vote on 2022 if the allegations are proven true. So dream on, American soccer fans; your hopes of hosting the 2022 World Cup aren't dead just yet.
