New Hornets Jerseys Make Room for Ads

The unveiling of the Charlotte Hornets new jerseys revealed a new quirk for the NBA, the logo on back to make room for front ad space.

By now we're sure you've probably seen the new jerseys for the new retro-throwback Hornets. But (maybe) what you didn't catch was the migration of the NBA logo from the front of the uni, to the back. Well the future's coming here and the intentional switch is almost certainly a move intended to free that space for sponsors/advertisements (see: Europe and the WNBA). A couple of seasons ago the move was already being discussed as an internal NBA study predicted the human-adspace hybrid could bring in an additional $100 million a year (aka: roughly a dozen courtside seats at MSG).

There's probably no better metaphor for sports today than replacing your iconic league logo with a 2.5" squared ad. We understand that that's an inevitable reality. Still we're holding out hope that this isn't the opening of some sort of Pandora's box of corporate whoredom.
