Michael Jordan went 6-0 in the NBA Finals. Kobe Bryant is 5-2. Tim Duncan has gone 5-1 so far. LeBron James is 2-3 for his career and 2-2 with the Miami Heat. And, you know what? That latter record is okay with LeBron. Following their Game 5 loss to the San Antonio Spurs last night, James spoke to the media about his tenure with the Heat. Check out what he had to say.
“You know, we went to four straight Finals in four years. You know, we’re not discrediting what we were able to accomplish in these four years. We lost one, we won two, and we lost another one. (We’ll) take 50 percent in four years in championships any day. Obviously, you want to win all of them, but that’s just the nature of the game. You win some; you lose some. You’ve just got to come back the next year and be better as an individual, as a team, and go from there.”
In a league which values the best players of all-time based on the number of chips to their name and their success on the biggest stage, this passive approach to losing it all will drive some people crazy. Just look a Jordan. MJ was so competitive and hated losing so much that he never came up short when the Larry O'Brien trophy was hanging in the balance. Simply put, LeBron can't just say that he'll settle with going 50 percent in four years. It will make people question his desire to win.
At the same time, we understand what LeBron is trying to say here. LBJ can't beat himself about not winning it all because his team did make it to four consecutive NBA FInals, an accomplishment that hasn't been done since the Larry Bird era Boston Celtics.
