Doc Rivers did not sign up for this. When he agreed to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers last summer, he didn't know that, in the middle of his first playoff run with the team, he was going to have to deal with a huge scandal involving Clippers owner Donald Sterling and some racist remarks that he made during a taped phone conversation. He didn't know that he was going to be forced to be the face of the franchise for a few days and was going to have to try and get a group of young men to play hard for him in spite of everything that was going on around them as a result of Sterling's comments. He didn't know that he was going to have to answer questions about boycotts and protests and race relations both inside and outside of the NBA.
Yet, Rivers has done a masterful job over the course of the last seven days in light of everything that has went down. He's done his best to keep the Clippers focused, he's answered every single question that the media has thrown at him, and above all else, he's done his job as the head coach of the Clippers and led them to the second round of the 2014 NBA Playoffs. It hasn't been easy, though, and we would argue that this has probably been one of the most challenging weeks of his entire life. And now that it's over, he probably can't wait to put it behind him.Â
