We guarantee you've never heard of Fordite in geology class. But the man-made stone is becoming a popular jewelry choice, particularly for gear heads.

Fordite, also known as Detroit Shale, is made from dozens of layers of excess paint that build up from hand-spraying cars. Because manufacturers no longer manually paint cars, Fordite has become somewhat rare. Much of the jewelry starts at more than $100.

If you're lucky enough to be dating a gear head, this would be a great gift. You should probably wife her up, too. Just get something a little more expensive for the ring.
