Golfer: Doug Sanders
Event: 1970 British Open
Doug Sanders was three feet away from his first major championship. All he had to do was sink this gimme putt, and he'd be champ. Sanders botched the 72 hole at St. Andrews, letting Jack Nicklaus slide right into first place.
In a 2003 interview with Golf Digest, Sanders had a solemn take on how that shot impacted his career: "It's all anybody wants to talk about. I won 20 times on the PGA Tour, and if you gave me one birdie, four pars and a bogey wherever I could put them, I'd have five majors."
