Husky Pride: Comparing the Success of the UConn Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Since 2004

Men's Team: 280-103 (33-6 in 2004, 23-8 in 2005, 30-4 in 2006, 17-14 in 2007, 24-9 in 2008, 31-5 in 2009, 18-16 in 2010, 32-9 in 2011, 20-14 in 2012, 20-10 in 2013, 32-8 in 2014)

Women's Team: 378-34 (31-4 in 2004, 25-8 in 2005, 32-5 in 2006, 32-4 in 2007, 36-2 in 2008, 39-0 in 2008, 39-0 in 2010, 36-2 in 2011, 33-5 in 2012, 35-4 in 2013, 40-0 in 2014)

Advantage: Women. The men's team has put together a pretty solid record over the last decade. But they lost more games in the first five years than the women's team lost in all 10 years. They also had two seasons that featured them hovering right around the .500 mark, which is something that hasn't happened on the women's side.

Men's Team: 2 (2011, 2014)

Women's Team: 4 (2009, 2010, 2013, 2014)

Advantage: Women. Not only do the women have two more titles than the men since 2004. But they have also gone undefeated and had perfect seasons during three of those four title runs.

Men's Team: 3 (2009, 2011, 2014)

Women's Team: 7 (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)

Advantage: Women. It's been seven years now—yes, seven years—since the women's team has failed to reach the Final Four. That is consistency at its finest.

Men's Team: 7 (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014)

Women's Team: 10 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)

Advantage: Women. To be fair to the men, they would have had eight NCAA Tournament appearances if they hadn't been banned from postseason play in 2013 because of prior academic issues. But even if they did have eight appearances, that obviously still wouldn't be as many as the women have had.

Men's Team: 1 (2011)

Women's Team: 8 (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014)

Advantage: Women. The Big East—the conference that UConn used to belong to—had a postseason tournament was always a crapshoot for the men. Anyone could win. It was the exact opposite on the women's side, where UConn routinely dismantled their Big East foes. It looks like they're going to continue to do that in their new conference, the American Athletic Conference, too.

Men's Team: 14 (Jeff Adrien, Hilton Armstrong, Josh Boone, Andre Drummond, Jerome Dyson, Rudy Gay, Ben Gordon, Jeremy Lamb,  Emeka Okafor, A.J. Price, Hasheem Thabeet, Charlie Villanueva, Kemba Walker, Marcus Williams)

Women's Team: 13 (Jessica Moore, Ashley Battle, Barbara Turner, Ann Strother, Wilnett Crockett, Ketia Swanier, Charde Houston, Renee Montgomery, Tina Charles, Kalana Greene, Maya Moore,Tiffany Hayes, Kelly Faris)

Advantage: Men. We have to give the men at least one win here, right?! Er, right. So by the numbers, we'll give this one to the guys.

Men's Team: 4 (Rudy Gay in 2006, Hasheem Thabeet in 2009, Kemba Walker in 2011, Shabazz Napier in 2014)

Women's Team: 7 (Renee Montgomery in 2008 and 2009, Tina Charles in 2009 and 2010, Maya Moore in 2009, 2010, and 2011, Bria Hartley in 2012 and 2014, Stefanie Dolson in 2013 and 2014, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis in 2013, Breanna Stewart in 2014)

Advantage: Women. The women's team has had more All-Americans, and they've also had five All-Americans who have won A-A honors more than once (and something tells us Stewart will be joining that list soon). The men's team can't mess with that.

Men's Team: 2 (Jim Calhoun, Kevin Ollie)

Women's Team: 1 (Geno Auriemma)

Advantage: Draw. We were tempted to give this category to the men since, you know, two is better than one. But Calhoun and Auriemma helped put Storrs, Conn. on the map—both figuratively and literally—and Ollie is already proving that he's going to extend the winning tradition that Calhoun started on the men's side. So we can't pick one over the other here. And we're guessing the men will gladly take a tie at this point.

Surprise, surprise…the women win again! It's pretty clear that if the UConn men's team was matched up against any other women's program in the country—or hell, any other men's program—they would wipe the floor with them. But the UConn women's team is on another level when it comes to success. They've set the bar high, too high for their male counterparts to reach, and it's going to be a long time before the men are able to accomplish everything that the women at UConn have been able to do. Not that that's going to stop Kevin Ollie & Co. from trying, which could result in a "triple-double" happening for the UConn program sometime soon. Maybe in 2024, guys?
