The Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and hell, even the Minnesota Timberwolves gotta be sick right now. With only a few games remaining, the Grizzlies, Suns and Mavericks are battling it out for the last two playoff spots in the Western Conference while their current records would have them sitting pretty as the third or fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves would still have a fighting chance at the eighth seed instead of already being mathematically out of contention. But maybe there's going to be change on the horizon.
According to San Antonio Express-News sports reporter Mike Monroe, NBA commissioner Adam Silver told the Spurs broadcasters that the league "might move" to a different postseason format which would award playoff spots to the teams with the top 16 records in the entire league, instead of the usual eight teams per conference.
So, let's say that the league put that plan into motion this season. Here's how it would all shake out if the season ended today:
1. San Antonio Spurs (62-18)
And here's what the matchups would look like:
(1) Spurs vs. (16) Bobcats
