North Carolina blew their chances to advance to the Sweet 16 after blowing a nine-point lead to Iowa State in the final four minutes. The last two points, a nice cut and a layup by DeAndre Kane, should've capped the game. But a mistake by the clock operator led to some confusion.
As you can see above, the clock has a delayed start when the ball gets passed inbounds (it's supposed to start immediately when that happens. Ask Paul Pierce's bottom). North Carolina tried to call a timeout when the ball was near halfcourt, but the referee intervened and decided the clock ran out, giving Iowa State the 85-83 win. Clutch performance from the refs and Iowa State. Reggie Miller's choke sign to UNC and the clock operator.
