SUV Owners are Paying Premiums for Parking in Big Cities

Just another way to take your money.

SUV owners have had to think twice about the costs of operating their vehicles, thanks to the rise in gasoline prices over the last decade and a half. But now, it appears that SUV owners will be nickeled and dimed even further when looking to park their vehicles.

Hotels, airports, and parking garages in some of the country’s busiest cities have levied significant fines and upcharges on some of our favorite oversized guests. Sources indicate that garages in Manhattan frequently charge between $10 and $15 more per day than they would a smaller vehicle. Locations in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco have jumped on the bandwagon as well.

Europeans still have it much harder though. Many cities have enacted taxes on driving an SUV into a city center (nearly a $40 charge in London). So, the next time you’re in the market for a big cruiser, it won’t be just the gas figures that you’ll have to worry about.
