James Dolan may own the Knicks. But he is not—we repeat, not—an expert when it comes to basketball or basketball-related things. You know this. Knicks fans know this. Hell, even Dolan himself knows this.
"I am by no means an expert in basketball," he said during Phil Jackson's introductory press conference yesterday. "I think I'm a little out of my element."
And according to a new Yahoo! Sports report, Dolan proved just how "out of his element" that he was back in 2010 when the Knicks were trying to woo free agents like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
After meetings with all three of those players, plus many others, Dolan reportedly gave the players and their representatives parting gifts. Those gifts had absolutely nothing to do with the Knicks or the NBA, though. Instead, Dolan decided to dish out copies of his band's CD, so that the players and their reps could enjoy a little JD & The Straight Shot after the meetings. At least, that was Dolan's thinking.
"He passed out copies of his CD," one source told Yahoo! Sports writer Adrian Wojnarowski.
Seriously, dude? You thought the free agents would enjoy that? Sigh. No wonder the Knicks weren't able to work out a deal with any free agents outside of Amar'e Stoudemire.
Let's hope that Dolan stays far away from the negotiating table moving forward and that Phil Jackson convinces him to leave his band's Frisbees CDs at home when it comes time to start talking to free agents again.
