For those of you who just accepted the fact that subway tokens are gone, you may want to stop reading now because your world is about to be turned upside down again. MTA spokesperson Kevin Ortiz told Fast Company recently that a new system will replace the replace metrocards by 2019. Ortiz didn't give specifics, but he did say that the current system and equipment is "on the verge of becoming obsolete." The new system is predicted to use some sort of smartphone or debit card scanning technology.

Fast Company writes that the new system will be implemented in hopes of reducing infrastructure costs and making things more convenient for riders. The only problem is that a system sophisticated enough for New York's needs doesn't exist yet, according to Ortiz. It looks like they have five years to figure it out.
