Cars in India are insanely cheap, but that low price tag comes with, well, a price. Tests by Global NCAP revealed that the five most popular small cars in India are unsafe. If any of them are involved in an crash, "fatalities or serious injuries could result."
Eighty percent of cars in India cost $8,000 or less. These low prices are partly a result of cutting safety features. None of the five cars Global NCAP tested—the Suzuki-Maruti Alto 800, Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo—have airbags.
VW has already pulled the Polo from India and promises that models after February 1 will come standard with airbags and anti-lock brakes. Ford basically said it'll check out the problem but hasn't made any concrete announcements.
We've never been happier with the price of cars in America. Not dying—or at least having a better chance of not dying—is worth the mark-up.
