Defense wins championships...except in 2013's SEC Championship. That essential aspect of the game was absent for the most part in a contest that saw Auburn beat Missouri 59-42 to win the SEC Championship. Tigers junior running back Tre Mason certainly isn't complaining though. In a game where Auburn totaled 676 offensive yards, Mason was responsible for a crazy 303, succeeding Chris Davis as the big man on campus.
By the third quarter, Mason had already eclipsed LSU's Justin Vincent's 2001 record for most rushing yards in an SEC Championship game. There's also the four-touchdowns Mason scored, which is a stat that tends to help a lot when it comes to these defensively absent games. His trips to the end zone moves him past Cam Newton for most at Auburn.
Four-touchdowns and 303 yards; that would be a fantasy football record if you could draft college players. Mason would've had around 60 points in a system with one point for every 10 rushing yards, one for every 25 passing yards, and six for every touchdown. That's well above the 57-point record Michael Vick set in 2010 when he threw for over 300 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, and had six touchdowns.
But if we're switching the conversation from what could be from what can be, Mason may be in conversation for a Heisman against FSU quarterback Jameis Winston. He's ran for under 99 yards just four times this season and busted out 164 yards and a touchdown last week against Alabama. In conclusion, do not sleep on Mason.
