It seemed like Chelsea was in control of their own destiny. Chelsea carried a 1-0 lead for 42 minutes, but Sunderland found a way to tie up the score at the 88' mark of the match after a late Fabio Borini goal that knotted game up at 1 apiece.

Early on in the extra minutes of the game, Vito Mannone kept his side in the contest, with the goalkeeper diving low to save David Luiz's volley.

From that point, Sunderland completely outplayed Chelsea and Ki Sung-Yueng scored the game-winning goal to seal up the victory 2-1 in favor of Sunderland. Sunderland will end the year bottom of the Premier League regardless of their performance in the League Cup, but this has to be an encouraging moment for the team. The Black Cats have now scored six own goals in 11 games.
