Did you put 10 bucks on Champion Baptist College +103 last night? Then we've got some bad news for you: You lost 10 bucks! Because amazingly, Southern University beat Champion Baptist—a small school located in Hot Springs, Ark. that belongs to the Association of Christian College Athletics—by a score of 116-12 last night. Yes, 116 to 12. And in doing so, they achieved (er, or should we say "achieved" since it's clear that Champion was outmatched?) a number of things. For instance:

  • Southern set a new college basketball record by jumping out to a 44-0 lead at the beginning of the game. The previous record was held by Seton Hall, which jumped out to a 34-0 lead against Kean College back in 1998.
  • Southern led the game 57-6 at halftime.
  • Southern outrebounded Champion Baptist 71-21 during the game.
  • Southern came within five points of setting a new college basketball record for biggest margin of victory. The record is 117 points, set by Long Island University in 1997 when they beat Medgar Evers by a score of 179-62.
  • Southern held Champion Baptist to just 6.8 percent shooting from the field.

We've certainly seen our fair share of blowouts in the world of college basketball. On almost any given night, there's a perennial powerhouse playing some team from West Bumblefuck State in a lopsided contest. But a 104-point victory? That's just ridiculous. So let's hope that Champion Baptist leaves Southern off their schedule next season. And if they don't, let's all remember that Southern -103 is definitely the play.
