Even though Tesla hasn't officially named its forthcoming mass-market car, people have been referring to it as the "Model E." It makes sense, given the names of Tesla's other two cars currently for sale— the Model S and Model X—and because the company applied to trademark "Model E" back in August.
But hold up. Ford isn't having that. The Detroit manufacturer applied to trademark "Model E" earlier this month. It's unknown whether Ford actually plans to put out a car with the name, or if they're just trying to block Tesla from doing the same. Ford has previously gone after companies for using names similar to its own Model T. In 2000 the company sued an Internet startup named "Model E," but a judge dismissed the case.
