It may hard to believe, but it has already been a little more than two years since Yao Ming announced his retirement from the NBA. Since departing the game of basketball, Yao has worked towards fulfilling the promise he made his parents when he signed his first contract with the Shanghai Sharks at the age of 17: "pursue my studies at the university level." Now in his third year, the New York Times caught up with the now 33-year-old, who drives more than an hour to Jiao Tong University with a lunch prepared by his wife, Ye Li.

While looking to fulfill the necessary requirements in the economics and management department, Yao obviously struggles with being a high-profile, extremely recognizable figure who is unable to even walk anywhere on campus without being swarmed by fans and students alike.
