Is Lorde's Song "Royals" Inspired by the Kansas City Royals' George Brett?

All because of a picture.

If you like the song "Royals" by Lorde, you may have to thank former player George Brett of the Kansas City Royals. Why's that, you ask? Because, in an interview with VH1, the 17-year-old singer reveals that she struggled to figure out a title for her now hit single until she came across a picture of Brett.

"There's no denying the fact that 'Royals' has seized the zeitgeist. And speaking of that track, Lorde herself recently spoke to us about how the song was inspired in part with her obsession with historic monarchs and, strangely enough, by an image of a baseball player wearing a Kansas City Royals jersey in National Geographic."

She goes on to say that "this image from the National Geographic (the above picture) of this dude just signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals.’ It was just that word. It’s really cool.”

There you have it, folks! Brett's inspiration simply comes from his team's jersey and nothing more. It has nothing to do with baseball or the legend in the picture.
