On Sunday afternoon, the Giants will head south to play an important road game against the Panthers. But right now, the team is dealing with something much more important than football.

John Coughlin, the brother of Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, passed away on Monday night following a freak accident that took place outside of his home in Hackensack, N.J. on Sunday night. According to the New York Daily News, Coughlin was exiting a cab that he took home after attending the Broncos/Giants game on Sunday when he slipped and fell and hit his head on the ground. The impact caused him to suffer a brain hemorrhage and he passed away the next day as a result of it.

"As a result of the fall, he had a brain hemorrhage," his close friend Larry Remmen told the NYDN. "It was just a freak thing that happened."

Tom Coughlin is trying to work through his brother's death right now, and he will coach the Giants against the Panthers on Sunday. But he's clearly upset about what took place earlier this week.

"Our family is thankful for the expressions of sympathy and prayers for our brother John's passing," he said in a statement. "We all appreciate them. John was a friend to all. He loved life, and he will be greatly missed. He left us way too soon."

He most certainly did. Our prayers are with the Coughlin family.
