NBA Finals Will Probably Be Switching Its Format Very Soon

Could be implemented next season.

Today we got word that the NFL was thinking about changing its playoff format. Coincidentally, news about the potentially NBA changing its format has dropped today as well. It's not extending the amount of teams in the tournament though...thankfully.

The NBA is probably going to change the Finals format from 2-3-2 to 2-2-1-1. The league's competition committee voted unanimously in favor of it. That should come as good news to those critical of that home advantage and love Game 7s. The lower seed will get the sixth game, which increases a likelihood of a Game 7.

The reason behind the switch from the 2-2-1-1-1 format to the current one in 1985 was because of situations like the long commercial travel between places like Boston and Los Angeles (the two teams that faced off in 1984).  The NBA came up since then and now teams are able to fly with their own charters.

The change may be made official by the committee's next meeting in October, just in time for the next Finals.
