College Kicker Attempts an Onside Kick to Himself and Succeeds (GIF)

The receiving team must have felt so sour.

What made Akron's miraculous near upset of the No. 15 Michigan last week even crazier was how irredeemably bad the program was for the past couple of years. If you think going 1-11 is awful, try coming up with a term that describes posting that record for three consecutive seasons. That was Akron 2010-12.

Akron's performance did not suddenly mean it was a good team this season though, and UL-Lafayette exposed that. Akron didn't get blown out, but it did get embarrassed on this particular play.

Normally you'd want to be prepared for anything when you're the receiving team...except maybe for the opposing team's kicker to do an onside kick to himself. That's just weird.

But as they say, it's only weird if it doesn't work, and Hunter Stover's onside kick to himself worked. It's extremely ballsy because not only was UL-Lafayette winning, but a failed attempt would've given Akron great field position. Also, kickers don't just kick the ball to themselves, because that would be weird hard to pull off with the level of skill required.
