Since 1950, on the third sunday in August, California's Monterey Pennisula has hosted America's (and probably the world's) most prestigious car show—the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The event now draws 200 of the world's most prized collector automobiles and motorcycles, effectively transforming the world's most famous 18th hole into the craziest parking lot ever.

The 2013 Concours celebrated Lincoln Custom Coachwork, the Aston Martin Centennial, and the mighty Porsche 911. All exhibited vehicles were judged for historical accuracy, technical merit, and style. A 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria was awarded best in show.

Off the Concours, on Pebble's practice green, attendees were offered first looks at a number of sensational concept cars—including the Spyker B6 Venator Spyder, the Jaguar Project 7, and the electric Porsche 918 Spyder. Autoblog called the scene "an embarrassment of riches." The concepts fulfill the promise of Pebble. While historic and vintage automobiles remind of tradition and entice new generations of collectors, the new models present the potential of the auto industry to continue its legacy of innovation.

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is where gear heads should want to go to die. Here's what we learned in 2013.
