The Louisville Cardinals are ranked No. 13 in the college football preseason top 25 poll that was released yesterday. And it sounds like their team may be getting a big boost before the season even starts later this month. That's because Michael Dyer—the running back who helped Cam Newton win a national championship a few years ago while playing for the Auburn Tigers—has reportedly decided to transfer to Louisville and will eligible to play this season.
For Dyer, it's been a long road from Auburn to Louisville. Back in 2011, after his sophomore season at Auburn, Dyer was suspended indefinitely by the Tigers for failing several marijuana tests. Then, he transferred to Arkansas State to play but was kicked off the team in January 2012 before he played a single game after police found a gun in his car after he was pulled over for speeding. And that forced him to enroll at Arkansas Baptist College, where he spent time trying to get his life back together. He eventually earned his associate's degree this year. Now, Dyer's mentor Arkansas Baptist president Fitz Hill says he's ready to return to his football career.
"He's excited to have an opportunity to resume his career," Hill said last night. "Many people doubted that Michael would ever make this comeback, and it's here."
Now it'll be interesting to see what he does with this new opportunity. And it'll be interesting to see how much of an impact he will be able to have on a Louisville team that's already pretty good. If it's a big one, the Cardinals could be in for a great season.
