During the Cowboys/Cardinals preseason game on Saturday, Arizona season-ticket holder John Coulter wanted to take a picture. So he asked his 15-year-old son to hold onto a beer that he had in his hand while he snapped a shot. Not a huge deal, right? It's not like he held the kid's legs while he did a keg stand.
But just seconds after Coulter gave his son the beer, two undercover cops walked up to him and told him that having his son hold the beer is illegal. They also pointed out that they could arrest him for the infraction. But instead, they told him that he had to leave the Cardinals' University of Phoenix Stadium immediately, which forced him to miss almost the entire game.
"Providing alcohol to an underage person or an underage person in possession of alcohol is a Class 1 misdemeanor," a police sergeant revealed a short time later. "The consequences could be up to, and this is a maximum, of two years in jail, $2,500 fine, and three years probation."
Fortunately, Coulter didn't get any of those things handed to him. He was only asked to leave the stadium. So in a sense, he got off easy. But should he really have been asked to leave in the first place? For simply allowing his son to hold a beer while he took a photo? It looks like NFL players aren't the only ones subjected to silly penalties during NFL games these days.
