It wasn't that long ago that most cars came with four-speed transmissions, and now people complain about not having a sixth, and Mercedes-Benz is introducing a nine-speed. This will no doubt improve fuel economy, but we worry that the transmission's computers will have a hard time figuring out which gear is best at the moment. We've found that cars we've tested with eight-speeds can have noteworthy delays, so hopefully Benz's coders are up to the task.

The 2015 CLS will be rocking this new unit, and you can expect to see it make its way into most Mercedes models over the next few years.
