Aaron Hernandez played college football at the University of Florida. But as of right now, you wouldn't be able to tell that if you visited the UF campus. That's because the Gators football program is doing everything it can to distance itself from Hernandez in light of the murder charges that were filed against him late last month. They started shortly after the charges were filed by removing photographs of Hernandez from the school's football facility. And earlier today, they went a step further by removing a brick honoring Hernandez from outside of Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
"We didn't feel it was appropriate to celebrate Aaron Hernandez," the school said in a statement. "We put together an immediate plan after the initial news broke to remove his likeness and name in various private and public areas in the facility, such as the South Endzone team area, locker room, football offices, Heavener Complex Kornblau Lobby, and the brick display entrance to the football facility. We were able to implement some of the changes immediately and this [brick removal] was a more complex process to complete with our vendors. The plan was to have everything completed before the end of July."
And now that the brick is gone, the process is complete. Even though Hernandez was a star when he played for the Gators, the school has basically erased him from the team's history. What a way to be remembered—or in this case, not remembered—by your alma mater.
