Serena Williams is obviously no stranger to controversy. Throughout her career, she has said and done a number of controversial things and made headlines for them. But something that she said during a recent Rolling Stone interview is likely going to stick with her for a long, long, long time.
While watching the news with reporter Stephen Rodrick during an interview for the RS piece, Williams saw a story about the now-infamous Steubenville rape incident involving two high school football players who raped a 16-year-old girl while some of their friends watched. And she shook her head in disbelief, according to Rodrick. But Williams wasn't disgusted by the actions of the teens who had committed the crime. Instead, she seemed disturbed by the victim in the case.
"Do you think it was fair, what they got?" she asked Rodrick. "They did something stupid, but I don't know. I'm not blaming the girl, but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you—don't take drinks from other people. She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember? It could have been much worse. She's lucky. Obviously I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."
YIKES. Did she really just say that?! With Wimbledon scheduled to start next Monday, this is the last thing Serena needed to say right now. Expect her to come under fire in 3, 2, 1...
