It's usually good to see somebody stick it to the Man, but this seems like taking it too far. After a request from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Chrysler has refused to recall 2.7 million Jeeps that the NHTSA says are unsafe. The agency found that Grand Cherokees from 1993 through 2004 and Libertys from 2002 through 2007 have fuel tanks at risk of causing a fire during a rear collision. The NHTSA also discovered that at least 51 (44 from Grand Cherokees) people died in car accidents because of the defect.
Still, Chrysler is holding firm, saying that the Jeeps are safe. According to the Seattle Times, such refusals are rare, but legal. The NHTSA can only force a company recall the offending cars with a court order. In the past three years, Chrysler has had 52 recalls.
It'll be interesting to see what happens next. Chrysler may be saving money in repairs, but this can't be good for publicity.
