A car chase is traditionally defined as the pursuit of suspects in a vehicle by law enforcement. However, once the car chase was prominently featured in film, thanks to cinematic masterpieces like Bullitt and The French Connection, its marketability became apparent, and it spread to a mainstream audience that was hungry for more. Today, nearly every action flick involves an inventive, adrenaline-fueled chase sequence that attempts to top its previous counterparts. Here are our top 50 picks of the most over-the-top car chases in cinematic history.
