Alex Ovechkin Takes His Third Hart Memorial Trophy

He joins the company of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, and now, Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals winger has become the eighth player in NHL history to win the Hart Memorial Trophy three times.

Ovechkin earned 56 points while leading the league with 32 goals. His most impressive accomplishment of the season, though, was leading Washington from last in the league to first place in the Southeast division in the last 23 games. Many believed he started off slow because of his switch to the right wing, but Ovechkin stuck with rookie coach Adam Oates' system. As you'd expect, Oates praised his star's success:

Sidney Crosby won the Ted Lindsay Award, which is given to who members of the NHL Players Association consider the most outstanding player.
