For the first time in Tony Kanaan's career, he was able to taste the milk at the finish line of the Indianapolis 500. Two yellows at the end of the race played a part, with Graham Rahal first crashing into the wall with seven laps to go, and last year's winner Dario Franchitti spinning out with three laps remaining. Franchitti's accident came one lap after the green was given, just enough time for Kanaan, who was in second at the time, to pass Ryan-Hunter Reay and hold the lead for the final yellow laps.
"It's for the fans, it's for my dad, who is not here, and it's for all of you guys," Kanaan said after the race. "... Finally got to put my ugly face on that trophy."
Twenty-one-year-old rookie Carlos Muñoz took second place in his shot at the cup. The race set records with a ridiculous 68 lead changes and a 178.4mph average speed. Watch the final laps below.
