Among a record 35 lead changes and near record-setting heat, Dario Franchitti took the top spot in a wild 2012 Indianapolis 500. This was Franchitti's third Indy 500 victory, all of which have been achieved under caution. The race came down to the very last lap, when Takuma Sato tried to pass Franchitti but slipped too low, losing control and spinning out.
Franchitti's run is incredibly impressive, considering he was in dead last in 33rd place at the first stop and made a run from 25th to 3rd on a single green flag run. It was the first time in 66 years that the previous year's winner (Dan Wheldon) was not racing to defend his title, leaving the race wide open. Franchitti dedicated the win to Wheldon. Scott Dixon took second, Tony Kanaan took third, Oriol Servia took fourth, and Ryan Briscoe grabbed the fifth spot.
