Nine years after his weather-abbreviated win in 1973, Gordon Johncock held off a furious charge by Rick Mears to win the 66th Indianapolis 500. The 0.160 seconds that separated the top two finishers was easily the closest finish in Indy 500 history at that point, but that wasn't the only thing that had fans chirping. The start of the race saw front row qualifier Kevin Cogan swerve into A.J. Foyt's car, triggering a crash that also took out Mario Andretti before the race even started.
