A.J. Foyt's 2nd Indianapolis victory was the final win by a front-engined roadster, but the day was marred by a fiery accident on lap two. Dave MacDonald was driving a notoriously ill-handling car built by Mickey Thompson, a ride that was turned down by several top drivers as being too dangerous to race. MacDonald lost control and collected seven other machines in a massive fireball as the cars were carrying a full load of fuel. MacDonald lost his life along with the popular Eddie Sachs, who was given a moving impromptu eulogy by radio announcer Sid Collins before the race was restarted. An estimated 30,000 requests for transcripts of Collins announcement were received from fans around the country.
