Billy Arnold looked poised to become the first back-to-back winner of the Indy 500, but tragedy struck. After leading 155 laps, he broke an axle, causing his wheel to careen into a spectator area and kill a young boy. Indianapolis native Louis Schneider inherited the top spot and led the final 39 circuits on the way to the win.
