This is a new one: A man in Chicago falsely reported his car stolen to avoid paying thousands of dollars in outstanding parking tickets.

According to the police report,  the man indicated that the parking tickets associated with his Cadillac had not been mailed to him since he sold it to a friend. Apparently, he then reported the vehicle stolen in an attempt to get the friend to update the vehicle's registration information.

Shockingly, after the man admitted to police that he had falsely filed a report, the police decided not take any further action or file criminal charges.

"He told us the truth, as goofy as the truth was; we're not going to take any action," Chief Steve Neubauer, told the Chicago Tribune.

No word on the status of the man's unpaid parking tickets.
