Volvo has been messing around with flywheel propulsion systems for decades, but this is the first time it really seems to be paying off. Volvo's new system uses a KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) similar to the ones used in Formula 1 mated to a four cylinder engine. The engine drives the front wheels and the 80 hp KERS unit drives the rear.
What's amazing is that, when tested in an S60 and compared to the company's six cylinder engine, the KERS equipped car gets 25% better fuel economy and does the sprint to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds, which destroy's the T6's 6.6 second time.
