A routine exercise nearly turned into an extremely ugly scene at the North and South Korean border Tuesday, when a U.S. military helicopter crashed to the ground. The cargo 'copter was carrying 21 people, 16 American soliders and five crew members.

"The helicopter crashed when it was making a landing around 1 p.m. this afternoon and all 21 personnel on board survived," a USFK spokesman said.

The soldiers inside the Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter were from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Okinawa, Japan. Six people were kept in the hospital for observation but were in stable condition.
