With a six-game lead over Golden State and only 6 games left, the Los Angeles Clippers will win the Pacific division, barring a collapse for the rest of the regular season. That means that the Clippers will eventually have a banner hanging in the rafters. But, if Blake Griffin had his way, the banner would not hang in the current home arena of "Lob City," the Staples Center. In a discussion with Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles, Griffin admitted:
“I kind of have bigger goals than that for the team,” Griffin said. “I think the team has bigger goals than that. We expected to win the division. We didn’t come into this season thinking, ‘Oh, it would be great if we could win the division.’ We expected it. It’s something to be proud of and maybe there’s a banner that goes up (in the training facility), but it’s not something that needs to go up in Staples [Center], and we don’t need to hang our hat on that.”
Even though the Clippers have played in the Staples Center since the 1999-2000 season, the arena has understandably never felt like home considering all the Lakers' banners and retired numbers—one of which is backwards—hanging throughout the rafters. If they do get that division title, would it make more sense to actually do what Blake suggests and hang the banner in the training facility? Guess we may find out soon enough, huh?
