SMH. Not cool, dude!
During a San Jose Earthquakes/Portland Timbers match yesterday, Earthquakes striker Alan Gordon got caught calling Timbers midfielder Will Johnson a "f------ faggot." Johnson—who was involved in a similar incident involving Seattle Sounders defender Marc Burch last year—responded by telling Gordon that he'll likely be suspended for three games for the transgression. And he's right. By the end of today, Gordon probably will be suspended for three games for using the slur, and rightfully so. He admitted his wrongdoing and issued an apology for using the homophobic slur last night, but there's still no place in soccer—or pro sports, for that matter—for behavior like this.
"I sincerely apologize for what I said in our game tonight," Gordon said in a statement last night. "Although I said it in the heat of the moment, that language has no place in our game. That is not my character, but there is still no excuse for saying what I said. I made a mistake and I accept full responsibility for my actions."
Now, he'll have to live with the consequences. Let's just hope this makes other athletes think twice before resorting to using homophobic slurs during games.
