Monday marks the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier and integrating professional baseball, a hugely important moment for sports and equality in the United States as a whole. At that point in time, leagues failed to see the hypocrisy in considering themselves as the top competition. By preventing African-American and Latino-born players from participating, they were in effect watering down their talent pool and dramatically lessening the legitimacy of their top players. As a result, many of the records and statistical benchmarks that have been lionized through the years really should be reconsidered.

While many of them are still great accomplishments worthy of celebration, they have to be considered in the context that they were achieved while wide swaths of talented players were unable to participate.
