Another No. 1 seed who had ridden a fantastic regular season to a First round bye, DePaul took on little-known St. Joseph's in what looked like an easy game for the Blue Demons. St. Joe's hung tough, though, keeping the scoring low and giving themselves a chance to win late. Trailing by one, they corralled a missed free throw and raced up the court, working the ball over to the wing before John Smith emerged wide open under the hoop. He converted the layup to give St. Joe's a shocking win, and after that moment it became clear that any team, regardless of record or pedigree, could be beaten in this Tournament.
