The rivalry that reshaped the NBA got started in earnest in the 1979 National Title game, as Magic's Michigan State squad took on Bird's upstart Indiana State Sycamores. While it was clear how much this game meant to both players, Bird's lack of a supporting cast prevented Indiana State from making this much of a contest. Michigan State remained in control throughout much of the game and won handily, but the game's real legacy is the decades-long rivalry it started between its two marquee players.
