There's a reason so few 15-seeds beat two-seeds. They come from smaller schools lacking in basketball tradition, playing in small conferences that do little to prepare them for the physical battles with major conference foes. Nobody gave the Hampton Pirates a chance in 2001, but they hung tough with an Iowa State team that had multiple future NBA players in their lineup. An incredibly gutsy pass by Hampton's Marseilles Brown and conversion by Tarvis Williams got the Pirates a one point lead with 6.9 seconds to go, but it took a missed layup at the buzzer by Iowa State's Jamaal Tinsley to create the signature moment of Hampton's David Johnson toting his coach Steve Merfeld all over the gym in celebration.
