The villainous Blue Devils could never be called a national darling, so when Indiana began mounting a comeback after falling behind by as many as 17 against the top-seeded and defending national champion Duke squad, the crowd was firmly in their corner. The Hoosiers almost threw their comeback away when Duke point guard Jay Williams was fouled as he made a three with 4.2 seconds left, but he missed the free throw and a put-back attempt was off the mark as well, allowing Indiana to survive and advance to the Elite Eight.
