The story of Hank Gathers is one of the most tragic in the history of the sport. A remarkable athlete with incredible promise, Gathers dropped dead with a heart condition in the middle of a game during the 1989-90 season. Bo Kimble, Gathers' close friend and co-star on that run and gun Loyola Marymount squad, wanted to pay tribute to his fallen friend when they reached the NCAA Tournament. Kimble elected to take his first free throw of the game left-handed as a tribute to the southpaw Gathers, and fittingly he never missed a single one as 11th-seeded Loyola went on a miracle run to the Elite Eight.
