In general, golf is one of the safest sports that you can play. Sure, there's always the off-chance that you might get bit by a black widow or some other kind of crazy insect on the golf course. But, golf-related injuries are few and far between.
Don't tell that to St. Louis golfer Mark Mihal, though. Late last week, he was playing a round of golf at a course in Waterloo, Ill. when he fell into a gigantic 18-foot sinkhole on a fairway and had to be saved by a few of his fellow golfers.
"I felt the ground start to collapse and it happened so fast that I couldn't do anything," he told golfmanna later. "I reached for the ground as I was going down and it gave way, too. It seemed like I was falling for a long time. The real scary part was I didn't know when I would hit bottom and what I would land on."
He landed in a pile of mud and, while he was certainly rattled, it doesn't sound like he suffered any injures that were too bad. But, it took two guys, a ladder, and a makeshift sling constructed out of a sweatshirt to pull him to safety. Pretty crazy story. Suddenly, golf doesn't seem as safe as it used to, now does it?
