The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is undoubtedly Europe's flagship sedan. When a select group of insiders view the latest generation, behind closed doors on May 15, the vehicle may just vault itself to halo status.

Rumors suggest that the next generation S-Class will come in no less than four body styles. Of course, we'll see a sedan (in multiple wheel-base lengths), but the probability of a coupe and a limousine Pullman model—a throwback to the '60s and '70s that will help replace the dead Maybach—is high. Most exciting, the S-Class may very well also come in 4-door convertible mode...rivaling Rolls-Royce and giving Mercedes the ultimate in upscale luxury.

What we do know about the new S-Class is that it will debut a new 9-speed gearbox that will slowly trickle down into the remaining Benz line-up.
